Abstract

This thesis examines “An Analysis of the Story of Prophet Abraham (ʿIbrāhīm) and Prophet Ishmael (Isḥāq) in the Qur’an.” The core focus is on the narrative of Abraham’s and his son Ishmael’s sacrifice (qurbān), as well as the symbolic meanings embedded in their story in QS As‑Ṣaffāt 102.

This study is a library research (library research), meaning it reviews and describes the symbolic significance drawn from the Qur’anic account of Allah’s command to Abraham to sacrifice Ismael. The researcher employs a semantic approach to analyze the issues under investigation. Data collection was carried out through documentation and literature review, tracing and gathering relevant scholarly sources related to the study’s title. In data analysis, the researcher uses a library research method.

The findings reveal the narrative of Abraham’s struggle and his son Ishmael’s devotion: Abraham was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved and only son, Ishmael. Ishmael’s sincere submission to Allah’s command and his obedience to his father Abraham are highlighted. The study also uncovers the symbolic meaning in QS As‑Ṣaffāt 102: Abraham dreams of sacrificing his son, conveys this vision to Ishmael, and Ishmael, with patience and faith, urges his father to fulfill the divine command. From this story, it is derived that on the Feast of Sacrifice (ʿId al‑Adḥā), Muslims who are able commemorate the event by offering qurbān, such as camels, cattle, or goats, in emulation of Abraham’s and Ishmael’s example.
