Focus and Scope

Kuriositas is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary scholarship on religion, culture, media, and social transformation in contemporary societies. The journal publishes original research articles that undergo rigorous peer review and contribute to global academic debates within the social sciences and humanities.

Kuriositas positions religion not merely as a system of belief or doctrine, but as a lived social practice, a mediated discourse, and a dynamic cultural process embedded in plural social, political, legal, and technological contexts. The journal draws upon and connects multiple fields, including religious studies, communication studies, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and related interdisciplinary domains.

The journal emphasizes analytical, conceptually grounded, and empirically informed research that moves beyond purely descriptive, normative, or doctrinal approaches.

Scope

Reflecting the strengths of its recent scholarly contributions, Kuriositas prioritizes studies that:

Examine digital and mediatized religion and the transformation of religious authority, discourse, and practice in global digital environments

Explore religion and culture in processes of acculturation, negotiation, and contestation, including issues of identity, gender, embodiment, and performativity

Analyze epistemic authority, interpretation, and knowledge production within religious traditions across historical and contemporary settings

Investigate religious moderation, pluralism, and intercultural communication in diverse and minority contexts

Address law, ethics, and social regulation as arenas where religion interacts with governance, morality, and public life

Kuriositas maintains a consistent engagement with comparative and transnational perspectives, particularly from the Global South, while remaining in dialogue with global theoretical frameworks. Rather than presenting local case studies in isolation, the journal foregrounds contextual depth combined with conceptual generalization, enabling findings to speak across regions and disciplines.

The journal situates its scholarship within global conversations on shared contemporary challenges such as social justice, peaceful coexistence, cultural diversity, and sustainability. While acknowledging global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, contributions are expected to engage these themes critically and analytically, rather than as policy advocacy.
